DISCOVERY

EXPEDITION FILES

For Discovery’s new show, Expedition Files, Pixeldust collaborated with Ping Pong Productions to craft a compelling opening sequence that captures the show’s spirit of exploration and mystery. Hosted by Josh Gates, the series delves into unsolved enigmas across history, bringing legendary mysteries to life with cutting-edge visuals and immersive storytelling. Our team was tasked with creating a dynamic animated composition that sets the tone for the show.

BEHIND THE SCENES: GREEN SCREEN SETUP

The opening sequence required a creative approach to bring the “corridors of time” to life. Josh Gates was filmed walking on a green treadmill surrounded by green screens, allowing Pixeldust to craft an abstract, shifting hallway of history in post-production. Collaborating closely with Ping Pong Productions, we employed strategic lighting, synchronized effects, and multiple camera angles to ensure a seamless composition. The video comparison displayed here showcases the transformation from raw green-screen footage to the final, polished sequence.

LOGO DEVELOPMENT

Creating the logo for Expedition Files involved balancing familiarity with innovation. The goal was to align with the Expedition Unknown brand while introducing a fresh and captivating look for new audiences. Our iterative design process included rounds of exploration to refine typography, color, and animation concepts. The final logo animates with a digital precision, complementing the show’s investigative tone. The logos displayed here are merely a few of the iterations that progressed towards the final design.
Pixeldust developed a comprehensive graphics package to support Expedition Files in all phases of production. This package included lower-third templates, bumpers, looping graphics for on-set use, and textless versions of key assets for maximum flexibility in post-production. The cohesive design ensured a professional and visually engaging experience for viewers, seamlessly integrating with the series’ themes of intrigue and discovery.

Final Video

The final opening sequence for Expedition Files brings together all elements into a captivating visual narrative. Josh Gates is seen walking through a surreal hallway of shifting eras, illuminating legendary mysteries while narrating the show’s premise: “In the corridors of time are mysteries that defy explanation.” Featuring a powerful score, dramatic sound design, and seamless transitions, the opening sequence sets the stage for an unforgettable journey into the unknown.
