SHUT IT OFF ASAP!
Pixeldust was asked to create an innovative graphics package for the popular YouTube channel AsapSCIENCE, whose members starred in the YouTube Red original series, Shut it Off ASAP!
ENVIRONMENTALLY CONSCIOUS GRAPHICS
Pixeldust’s team of animators were asked to create simple animations to explain complicated science concepts, while keeping with the organic and environmentally conscious tone of the show. To achieve this end, Pixeldust developed a “doodles in a sketch book” kind of look, opting to work with a gritty paper textured background, which would unroll to reveal animations to explain the many scientific experiments in the show. In addition to in-show graphic explainers, Pixeldust also provided the title open and lower thirds elements for the series.
While working with a paper background was an approach Pixeldust had explored in many previous projects, the design team chose to elevate the style with textures and pops of color that would allow the important elements of the animations to stand out. Among the textures used were torn cardboard, ripped newspapers, rusted metals, and many more. This “recycled” look also served to support the main intention behind the show: finding ways to live without electricity using only renewable forms of energy.
The title reveal underwent several iterations. While exploring the show’s graphic style, Pixeldust’s design team developed a style of simple line drawings in combination with highly tangible textures overlaid on top.
