01 — Overview

In a dark room, a single lightbulb sputters to life. For the Nuclear Energy Institute's See the Light campaign, Pixeldust told the story of a carbon-free future with nothing but light, shadow and a grid of glowing bulbs.

Reaching a carbon-free future is one of the defining challenges of our time. The Nuclear Energy Institute wanted viewers to think differently about how to get there, and to see why investing in nuclear energy is key to securing that future.

Pixeldust produced a 3D animated ad that makes the case visually. One bulb becomes a grid, the grid becomes a wall of light, and the message lands: addressing the climate crisis will take a diverse carbon-free energy system of wind, solar and nuclear.

Storytelling with light and shadow

One bulb in a dark room

The ad opens in a dark, mysterious room where a lone lightbulb sputters to life. It is later revealed to be one of a vast grid of bulbs, and a portion of them pulse on, symbolizing how much of the world’s energy is carbon-free today.

Row after row: the case for nuclear

To urge viewers to consider the critical role nuclear energy will play, more and more rows of bulbs spark to life with increasing intensity. Once every bulb is lit, they glow brighter still, in an awe-inspiring display of incandescence.

Text placed inside the 3D scene

To support the narration, Pixeldust’s animators placed the text within the scene rather than on top of it. The type reacts to the lighting changes while staying legible at all times, and careful placement means it never covers the 3D animation.

The original storyboards

Every beat was storyboarded before animation began, from the first flicker in the dark to the final wall of light, so the story could be told almost entirely through lighting.
