Pixeldust created the graphics package for AsapSCIENCE's YouTube Red original series, Shut It Off ASAP!
What does science look like when you shut off the power? In the YouTube Red original series Shut It Off ASAP!, the hosts of the popular AsapSCIENCE channel set out to live without electricity, using only renewable forms of energy, and the show’s graphics had to feel just as resourceful.
Pixeldust created the series’ complete graphics package: in-show animations that explain complicated science simply, plus the title open and lower thirds, all in a hand-made, “recycled” style that matches the show’s environmentally conscious tone.
AsapSCIENCE, the popular YouTube science channel, asked Pixeldust to create the graphics package for Shut It Off ASAP!, a YouTube Red original series in which its hosts try to live without electricity, using only renewable forms of energy. The animations had to explain complicated science simply, in a tone as organic and environmentally conscious as the show itself.
Pixeldust developed a handmade look: simple doodles on gritty, textured paper that unrolls to reveal each experiment. The style keeps the science approachable and makes every explainer feel like a page from the hosts’ own notebook.
Paper backgrounds were familiar territory for the studio, so the designers pushed the style further with found textures (torn cardboard, ripped newspaper, rusted metal) and pops of color that make the key elements of each animation stand out. The recycled look reinforces the show’s message about living sustainably.
The title reveal went through several iterations before landing on simple line drawings layered with highly tangible textures. Pixeldust carried the same system into the series’ lower thirds, giving the whole show one consistent, handcrafted identity.
